Chapter Ten

That afternoon Cillian came rushing over. He banged on the front door, earning an evil eye from Wyatt. I was afraid my husband was going to pull out one of his many guns when he saw who was disturbing his quiet afternoon.

Seeing Wyatt brought Cillian up short. “Oh—er….”

Apparently, he got shy around cops.

“Come in,” I called from the living room where my feet were happily propped up on the coffee table, and there was a piping hot cup of tea in my hands.

Wyatt moved only the barest inch, making Cillian slide past him. I tried, but I couldn’t stop the eye roll that threatened to take over my entire expression. Men. How did they ever get anything done?

Slapping a newspaper down on the table in front of me, he sank into the reclining chair that Wyatt usually occupied. The look he gave the Irishman was nothing friendly as he took a seat next to me on the overstuffed couch.

I ignored them both and picked up the paper, reading the article it was turned to. It was an issue of the Miami Star, and it sported an exposé on fungus in hostels.

I made a face. “Do I really have to read this?”

“Farther down,” he said, “it gets less gross and more interesting.”

Heaving a big sigh, I read more deeply into it. The article didn’t get less gross, but it did get more interesting. The reporter traced the strand of fungus back to some hostels in Europe. Namely, Ireland.

The reporter’s byline proudly read ‘Amanda Shard’.

When I looked up, Cillian said smugly. “Now there, did I steer you wrong? The timeline for the article puts her in Ireland during the museum robbery.”

A wild strand of excitement coursed through my blood. It was circumstantial, but it was something. If it turned out to be Shard, Wyatt wouldn’t have to say good-bye to his best friend.

And, if it turned out to be Shard, I could finally see the police put that horrible woman behind bars. Good times all around.

“I don’t suppose this article also puts her in Boston when the collector was killed?” I asked.

Cillian’s orange head shook. “No, but it doesn’t put her anywhere else, either.”

“I’ll take what I can get.”

After a moment of reflective silence, Wyatt offered his two cents. “Your theory is lacking in the hard evidence department.”

I raised an eyebrow at him. “Aren’t they always?”

It was a fair point. Unlike the police, I didn’t have the high-tech equipment to solve cases at the drop of a hat. I had to use real intellect.

I’d told this to Wyatt a couple times. He was usually less than pleased to be lumped in with the “dumb cops of Waresville”. In truth, he was a very capable detective. Too bad he couldn’t be my sidekick; he already had a job as a crime solver.

Which didn’t stop Vic from helping me out, but to be fair, she wasn’t a very good cop.

I turned to my current sidekick. “Think we should pay Ms. Shard a visit?”

A grin.
